This October we’ll be hosting another double-stuffed lineup to celebrate The Spooky Season with Hack or Slash. The Spooky Season isn’t limited to October, though.
In fact, the Spooky Preseason officially starts September 1st.
Through the entire month of September, we’re running a preseason challenge for our listeners. We want you to help us prepare for October by joining our free Discord server and mingling with the family.
You already know we believe horror is for everyone — we say that every episode. You may not know, however, that the ultimate goal for our show is to foster an environment in which conversations about horror movies are used as catalysts to build enriching connections between people.
We offer a safe, inclusive space for fans to be fans and connect over a shared love of horror movies. To celebrate that throughout the month, each Discord member will gain points just for participating in our community by talking about all things horror, connecting with each other, and participating in our live stream chats.
On October 1st, though, we’ll announce the top two community members (one patron, one listener) with the most points. Those winners will receive a special package containing two pieces of our podcast merchandise — one of which is custom designed to match our October theme.
We’ll also have a little something special for our runner ups.
Rules of the Game
Step 1: Join the Discord
Visit https://links.hackorslash.live/discord to join our server. Once you join, accept the rules and introduce yourself in our introductions channel.
Step 2: Participate and have fun
Once you’re in, you’ll automatically accrue experience points for participating in conversations, welcoming folks to our server, joining live streams, and engaging each other in almost every channel.
Step 3: Invite your spookiest friends
Share our Discord invitation link with friends you think would love to join in on the fun, or even enjoy the show. We want to grow our community as much as possible ahead of our October festivities! If you refer a friend, make sure they tag you in their introductions so we can award you the proper bonus points.

Discord? I don’t know her.
The term Discord server may be new to some of you, and that’s okay! It’s a free platform used for messaging, voice, and video with friends and communities. Discord was a natural choice for us since we’ve used it to record our shows (and work with guests), and it has powerful integrations we can use as we continue to grow. We launched it publicly in March, and it’s quickly become a great place to connect with us and fans of our show.
How does the point system work?
We have a bot in our server that will automatically award points whenever you interact with the community. Additionally, community members will be awarded a bonus batch of points when attending live events (tier ranking streams, watch parties, etc.). Each host will also have a discretionary bonus they can award to a community member for outstanding citizenship and community fostering.
Throughout the month, you’ll be tagged as you level up in the server. You can use the /levels command at any point to see our leaderboard!
Exclusions apply. The self-promotion channel won’t accrue any points if it’s the only channel you’re participating in. Additionally, spamming one channel like horror memes or self-promotion will result in a reduction of points.
Okay, I’ll bite. What’s the reward?
Some may say the real rewards are the friends we make along the way. 🥹
Materially speaking, though, the top two winners will receive a Scare Package containing two pieces of merch, and an additional gift from our Spooky Season Sponsor. The prizes will be revealed mid-September, but just know that if you win, you’ll be sufficiently equipped to enjoy an October full of cozy spooks alongside us.
