Welcome to the very first edition of Slasher Digest! I’m thrilled to bring you this new monthly roundup that will keep you connected to all things Hack or Slash, along with the latest happenings in the world of horror. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or you’re just joining our community, this newsletter is your one-stop source for everything you need to stay in the loop.
Our beloved Spooky Preseason has been nothing short of a blast. We’ve spent the past month diving into some of the most anticipated horror releases, revisiting classics, and sparking unforgettable discussions on our Discord server. From our live episode recordings to the return of fan-favorite watch parties, it’s been a month packed with scares, insights, and a ton of laughs.
As we bid farewell to Spooky Preseason, we’re only getting started. The true fun begins now as we look forward to Spooky Season, with an even more exciting lineup of episodes, special events, and community activities. This is the time of year when horror truly shines, and we can’t wait to experience it with you.
Thank you for joining us on this journey. The Slasher Digest is here to bring you all the gory details, highlights, and surprises Hack or Slash has in store. Let’s make this Spooky Season one to remember!
We examined the legacy of a storied franchise with a long-awaited old versus new episode: The Omen (1976 vs 2006).
We unpacked human resilience in A Quiet Place: Day One (2024).
We buckled up for xenomorphs and the revitalization of a franchise with Alien: Romulus (2024).
We explored the conceptual brilliance amidst narrative chaos of Cuckoo (2024). (In this episode’s b-side, our patrons were also treated to seeing our concept art for wigged horror icons.)
We dove into what might be the lowest point of a once promising franchise with Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire (2019).
August 28th marked the 15th anniversary of Rob Zombie’s Halloween II (2009), and our beloved Historian Nathan penned a piece outlining why he loves Scout Taylor-Compton’s Laurie Strode.
The Poohniverse is assembling and the latest trailer in its cinematic universe has dropped. Check out the official trailer for Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare.
We’ve got our booth set for Spooky Empire: The Dark Side of Comic-Con, and we can’t wait to see you there. Take a look at the current roster of guests — this is rumored to be Clive Barker’s final convention appearance.
We’re counting down the days until we’re at Spooky Empire in October, but we don’t have to wait that long for another look at David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown. Check out the official trailer for Terrifier 3 (2024), which releases October 11th.
While our favorite brutal clown is just around the corner, the official teaser for another Thornton film has made its rounds on the internet. 1928’s Steamboat Willie entered public domain recently, and Thornton’s taking a stab at the mouse himself. Take a look at what’s to come in Screamboat.
After what felt like an eternity in silent limbo, the new take on Salem’s Lot (2024) is finally slated to premiere on Max this October.
Our ultimate goal is to foster an environment in which conversations about horror movies serve as catalysts for enriching connections between people, and our Discord server is where that comes to life.
Here are a few highlights:
Our community is in full swing crafting 31 Days of Horror lists.
Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire (2019)Â has more support than we anticipated.
We haven’t covered Strange Darling (2024) on the show yet, but our listeners have a lot to say about it.
Spooky Season is our time to shine as horror fans, and if you’re anything like us, you’ll inevitably have folks flocking to you to ask for movie or activity recommendations to celebrate.
Here’s a look at what we’re enjoying this month:
