Slasher Digest: The Ides of March

Hey there, Beep-Boop.

This month, I’ve been reflecting on how much horror—both on-screen and on the page—has been a lifeline lately.
March brought one of our busiest months in Hack or Slash history, with a lineup that could rival our peak spooky season. From launching our first Audio Companion edition of this newsletter to rolling out a full-blown 64-villain Monster Madness tournament, we’ve kept our heads spinning and our mics hot.
What started as a fun idea from Chel snowballed into blog posts, recap episodes, and a Discord thread that spiraled gloriously into philosophical debates about Leatherface’s philanthropic values and Godzilla’s cinematic lore. You folks really showed up for this.
This month was packed to the brim with production, planning, and a monstrous amount of content (eight episodes, to be exact), but between the chaos, I carved out little moments to reconnect with the genre in new ways.
I finally finished the novelization of Halloween Ends—which, surprisingly, gave Corey Cunningham more emotional depth than the movie ever dared to—and I’ve been slowly making my way through Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, which is beautifully written but dark as hell.
And while most of my reading has been horror, the Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins hit me like a personal attack—in the best way. I needed it.
But what I’ve really loved this month is how deeply our community has leaned in—from Monster Madness debates to Discord deep cuts, from short film recs to book club threads popping off. This feels like the most energized we’ve ever been, and if this is only the beginning of 2025, I can’t wait to see what else we conjure together.
